School Improvement Plans provide a map educators can use to successfully realize sustained improvement in student performance.  However, technically sound plans can often fall short of their goals due to overlooking perhaps the most important step - understanding the culture of an organization.  In this workshop, we draw from research presented in a case study format to assist what the authors refer to as “the complex territory of school culture.”  Organizational cultures are complex and if this nuance is not accounted for, it can pose significant challenges to the technical fixes embedded in school improvement plans.  Participants will work with research-based models to assist them with identifying key characteristics of their schools culture and will develop plans for engaging with and energizing educators to support the successful implementation of school improvement plans.
