August 23, 2014

The 9th Annual Mel Osterman School Law Conference was held this summer on August 5 at the Western Turnpike Golf Course in Guilderland, NY. Over thirty local school officials and law representatives attended for the latest updates on legislation affecting schools in New York State.

Jay Worona, Esq., General Counsel for the New York State School Board Association led the event’s keynote address. Worona detailed the legislation behind the new Common Core Implementation Reform Act, as well as legislation affecting: charter schools; health education; universal pre-kindergarten programs; school district reorganization; and contracts for excellence.

The event also featured presentations on Responding to Employee Mental Health Impairments (including substance abuse), Technology and Cameras in the Hallways, Excellence in Teaching Funds, and Tax Caps.

This annual event honors the legacy of Mel Osterman, a supporter of education, the arts, and CASDA. The law firm of Whiteman, Osterman, and Hanna LLP continues to support his initiatives by sponsoring this conference every year. Plan to attend next year’s conference to receive important information on legislation affecting your schools.
