CASDA faculty member Jennifer Bashant, Ph.D. was recently published in the Long Island Education Review. Her timely article, Keeping Your Vision in Mind: Leading in Uncertain Times, speaks to district change leaders charged with taking schools through an incredibly politically charged climate in education. “Principals and school leaders are being expected to do more with fewer resources than ever before”, Bashant writes. The article provides a structure valuable to school leaders as they enter the 2014-2015 school year.
Bashant outlines five major areas of focus: understanding and controlling your time; engaging parents and your community; building on strengths with teacher leaders and delegation; concentrating on a few areas of increased development; and making effective decisions.
Professional learning communities also play a key role of advice in this article, as Bashant explains that they empower educators to take collective responsibility for student outcomes and peer learning. An expert in professional learning communities, Jennifer Bashant leads the very successful Capital Region Urban High School Principal’s Group, a PLC empowering principals of urban high schools to share common challenges and find innovative solutions.
