The 11th Annual Mel Osterman School Law Conference was held on August 4 at the Albany Country Club in Voorheesville, NY. The event featured more than 50 local school officials and law representatives in attendance to learn about the latest updates on legislation affecting schools in New York State.
Jay Worona, Esq., General Counsel for the New York State School Board Association led off the event by giving an update on the changes to education laws in New York State over the past year. Jay Girvin of Girvin & Ferlazzo LLP spoke on the important topic of harassment and discrimination in schools. His presentation focused on the latest issues on this topic including providing school officials with ideas for the formation of a safer, more tolerant community for all students and employees. The event also featured presentations on dealing with special education issues and APPR. The event closed with a panel discussion on criminal activity in schools that included former Colonie Chief of Police Steve Heider, Shenendehowa Superintendent Dr. Oliver Robinson, Columbia High School Principal John Sawchuk and Whiteman Osterman & Hanna’s Robert Schofield.
