It is with mixed emotions that I announce the retirement of Dr. James Butterworth, Executive Director of the Capital Area School Development Association, effective September 1, 2017. I am excited to know he is ready to contribute to our field in new ways; however, he will be greatly missed by many. In addition to his most recent role at CASDA for the past seven years, Jim has provided us over 40 years of devoted service to the field of education in capacities ranging from school principal to superintendent to Assistant Commissioner of Education at the New York State Education Department.
Jim has engaged in many forms of professional service over the course of his career, such as consultation and advisement on leadership, school improvement, professional development and support for low performing schools. He has served his alma mater, the University at Albany, in many capacities and over the years has received its Excellence in Education and Excellence in Alumni Service awards as well as the University's Burton Award for Distinguished Public Service. Through his leadership and innovation, Jim has demonstrated a commitment to excellence that we have come to depend upon. His dedication to public service has been an inspiration to us all and offers a reminder that if we can serve, we should.
We know you will all join us in wishing Jim well as he begins a new chapter in his professional life. He looks forward to continuing his work in the School of Education at the University at Albany, focusing his efforts around teaching, research and writing.
Jim's retirement from his post as Executive Director of CASDA is our loss, but his many contributions to education are everlasting and immeasurable. We extend sincere gratitude and warm wishes for a well-deserved respite. We all wish Jim the very best.
The Executive Committee will be updating member districts on the search process for a new Executive Director in the near future.
