HELPFUL STRATEGIES FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT
Wednesday, October 18, 2017
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Cost: $99 per site (can include as many faculty and staff as desired)
This is a webinar and will be accessed via your computer the day of event
The webinar will begin with a panel discussion led by CASDA faculty member and former superintendent Dr. Lynn Macan. Former East Greenbush Board of Education President Dr. Shay Harrison will also offer his perspective in developing an effective superintendent evaluation process. Dr. Charles Dedrick, former District Superintendent of Capital Region BOCES and current Executive Director of the NYS Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS), has worked with many Boards of Education in hiring new chief school officers and helped both parties establish clear priorities as district policy makers and leaders. This discussion will emphasize the importance of the superintendent evaluation process and provide some useful assessment strategies for Board members and superintendents.
The second half of the webinar will be an interactive PowerPoint presentation by Dr. Macan, which will include an overview, timeline, Commissioner's Regulations, Board policy references, how to get started, identifying who is involved, building trust and transparency and goal setting. The main thrust of the presentation will be the Why? Who? How and What? of the process as opposed to how to use a specific instrument or rubric.
The program will close with final comments from Dr. Dedrick, Dr. Macan and Dr. Harrison. Webinar participants will have an opportunity throughout the webinar to submit questions to the panel.
Evaluating the superintendent of schools is a comprehensive process, not a single event. Webinar participants will gain insight regarding:
The experiences of a well-respected and longtime Board of Education member and two former successful superintendents.
The evaluation process in terms of the sequence of events, time commitment, Board of Education policies and expectations for both Board Members and the Superintendent.
Ways of documenting and measuring the superintendent’s performance in order to provide quality feedback.
Effective assessment tools.
Multiple sources of information in order to assess performance strengths and weaknesses.
Alignment of district goals and priorities with a performance based instrument.
Participants will have an opportunity to submit questions to the three panel members during the program.
