Student Empowerment Roundtable

A chance to collaborate with colleagues and a cross-district cohort of student leaders.

Students are experts on their own education, but schools often struggle to meaningfully empower young people. Student voice initiatives, while well intentioned, are often superficial and ignore deeper issues that impact students’ lives. This roundtable series will be driven by both research and practice. Participants will explore research supported strategies such as Youth Participatory Action Research and Educational Co-Design that move beyond surface-level programs and create space for authentic collaboration between youth and adults. In later sessions the roundtable will also provide opportunities to work with and learn from Capital District Students for Equity to put ideas into action.

Participants will:

  • Reflect on current student voice practices and develop tools to engage with students more equitably and authentically.

  • Explore research on effective student empowerment.

  • Problem-solve on how to best apply these ideas in their district, building, or classroom.

  • Collaborate with a cross-district cohort of student leaders.
