Preparing Students to Grapple with 21st-Century Problems Using Innovation-Based Instruction—Bite-Sized Workshops to Strengthen Elementary Science Teaching
FREE Five-session asynchronous PD series by CreositySpace
This 5-session asynchronous PD series presented by CreositySpace introduces teachers to a series of bite-sized instructional strategies that they can implement in their classrooms without any additional equipment. Each session takes approximately one hour to complete and includes a 15–20-minute video along with brief, interactive activities. To earn credit, participants must complete the video and accompanying activities and submit their work and reflections through an online form. Upon review and confirmation that the submission meets quality expectations, participants will receive one CTLE hour per video/submission combination.
The opportunity window will be open from May 1 – Aug 30. Complete the sessions at your own pace during this window. Video and submission links, as well as instructional support contact information, will be provided upon registration.
Session One: Using innovation prompts to engage your K-5 classroom
Getting students to connect to and see value in their ideas is a key ingredient in student engagement and in fostering student confidence. Innovation prompts are an easy-to-implement classroom tool designed to let students connect with and see value in their ideas.
Session Two: You can't be what you can't see - Infusing career exploration into the elementary classroom so "no child is left behind"
Innovation and entrepreneurship help students from all backgrounds and learning abilities see themselves in science & the larger STEM community. Biographies and informational text reading are cornerstones of any elementary literacy curriculum. The stories of present-day STEM entrepreneurs personalize learning and modernize science instruction, while exposing students to a broad range of career opportunities.
Session Three: Using innovation & entrepreneurship to personalize reading and writing
Effective writing skills are fundamental to student success throughout school and their career. Figuring out how to effectively address multiple writing levels in your classroom or simply engage elementary students in developing their writing skills, can be a challenge.
Session Four: Connecting science and social studies using real-world challenges
Entrepreneurship is all about developing a product or service to solve a "customer need" (i.e. real-world challenge). Many entrepreneurs (both STEM and non-STEM) are inspired by challenges they see in their own communities - forming a natural connection between innovation, entrepreneurship and social studies.
Session Five: Becoming comfortable learning alongside your students
Innovation, by definition, is new and often not fully understood. To include innovation as a core component of instruction, teachers much be comfortable not having all the answers and learning alongside their students.
